چکیده

A study of the utilization of CH&140COOH and CH&1400H by yeast. has revealed significant differences in the rat.e and manner of disappearance of these substances from the growth medium, as well as in yeast growth (1). Since tagging of the two compounds in the manner indicated would render all pyruvate molecules equivalent. t.o acetate after decarboxylation and oxidation, the extent of their equivalence in anabolic processes can be readily evaluated. The results presented herein point to relatively large variations in the conversion of these substrates to fat,ty acids, humin, and amino acids.

Utilization of C14 labeled pyruvate and acetate by yeast.

The metabolism of pyruvate and acetate has been widely investigated in a variety of organisms. Studies of pyruvate fermentation in yeast, as well as the aerobic metabolism of both compounds in animals and microorganisms, have established the import.ance of decarboxylation as an initial step in the anaerobic metabolism of pyruvate and of the central position of the Krebs tricarboxylic acid cycle...

The synthesis of radioactive cholesterol and fatty acids in vitro.

It has been established that rat liver slices are able to convert acetate (l), acetone (2), pyruvate (3, 4), butyrate, hexanoate, and octanoate (4) to cholesterol and long chain fatty acids. Zabin and Bloch (5) and Price and Rittenberg (6) administered 1 ,3-C14-acetone to rats and demonstrated that it is converted to fatty acids and cholesterol. The former investigators (5) also reported that m...

Assimilation and metabolism of exogenous organic compounds by the strict autotrophs Thiobacillus thioparus and Thiobacillus neapolitanus.

The assimilation and utilization of the individual carbon atoms of pyruvate and acetate by cells of Thiobacillus thioparus and T. neapolitanus, in the presence and absence of an energy source, were studied by use of radioactive substrates. Both organisms produced (14)CO(2) from (14)C-labeled pyruvate, but more came from carbon 1 than from carbons 2 or 3. The conversion of the carbons of acetate...

Conversion of acetate and pyruvate to aspartic acid in yeast.

Recent investigations by Ehrensviird et al. (1) have revealed that the carbon skeleton of aspartic acid in Torula yeast can arise readily from administered acetate. With C1aH&“OOH, the aspartic acid formed during growth contained Cl4 equally distributed between the two carboxyl groups, and most of the C** equally distributed between the 2 central carbon atoms. In the preceding papers (2, 3) the...

The biosynthesis of radioactive fatty acids and cholesterol.

The biological synthesis of long chain fatty acids from acetate by slices of rat liver tissue was demonstrated by Bloch, Borek, and Rittenberg (1) in 1946, and has been repeated by several investigators (2, 3). The effect of insulin on this incorporation was studied by Bloch and Kramer (2), who reported that, whereas insulin inhibited the incorporation of labeled acetate into fatty acids, the c...
